The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) is telling Americans that they should be prepared for the possibility of a COVID-19 outbreak. Here are the items recommend to prepare:
1. Prepare 2-week’s food and water
Prepare food that have long life shelf ahead in case anything happen, also avoid not necessary grocery shopping when coronavirus outbreak kick in. For example:
- Cases of Water
- Rice and other grains
- Nuts and dried fruits
- Can food
- Frozen food that can store freezer for a long time, such as red meat, seafood, frozen fast food, etc.
- Have enough pet food if you have pets at home
2. Prepare some prescription drugs in advance
Especially to patients with chronic diseases, family members should make sure those patients have enough medicines in case you can’t go out to refill those when serious COVID-19 outbreak kick in.
3. Prepare some common over-the-counter medicines
Currently, we do not have medicines can cure COVID-19 virus, but we should prepare some common OTC medicines to cure some common cold or Mild pneumonia. If OTC medicines work that could save your time to see doctor and reduce risk to spread the virus or get infected by someone else.
For example, you may need to check your temperature.
Antipyretic and paracetamol and ibuprofen for fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain and other symptoms:
Cough medicine Delsym or cough expectorant Mucinex DM:
Pepto Bismol for nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, and electrolyte solution to prevent dehydration caused by fever, sweat, diarrhea, etc:
There are also vitamin supplements to boost your immunity, like Airborne or Emergen-C
4. Prepare enough daily necessities hygiene supplies
Such as toilet paper, hand sanitizer, detergent, etc. During the outbreak, paying attention to personal hygiene and home cleaning can greatly reduce the risk of disease transmission.
For instant, bring some hand soap or hand sanitizer with you when you heading out, recommend to get a water-free hand sanitizer containing more than 60% alcohol.
Alternatively, the individually packaged alcohol cotton pads are easy to carry, and are very useful whether they are used to wipe hands or disinfect items.
Household disinfectants contain chlorine bleach and medical alcohol. You may also prepare one bottle each for emergency use.
